- İngilizcede modal verbs (can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would) diğer fiillerle birlikte kullanılarak olasılık, zorunluluk, izin, tavsiye ve yetenek gibi anlamlar katar; kendileri çekimlenmez, “-s” almaz ve “do/does” istemez.
- Can / could daha çok yetenek ve izin için; may / might ise özellikle olasılık ve (may ile) daha resmi izin için kullanılır. “Could” ve “might”, “can” ve “may”e göre daha düşük ihtimal veya daha nazik ton verir.
- Must çok güçlü bir zorunluluk, yasak veya çıkarım, should ise daha yumuşak bir tavsiye, beklenti veya “yapılması iyi olur” anlamı taşır; bu yüzden “must” ve “should” arasında ciddiyet farkı vardır.
- Will / would çoğunlukla gelecek planları, niyet, teklif ve varsayımsal durumlar için kullanılır; “would” özellikle koşullu cümleler (if clause), nazik teklifler ve geçmiş alışkanlıklar anlatırken öne çıkar.
Bir öğrencinin ‘You must…’ yerine ‘You should…’ ya da ‘You could…’ diyebileceğini bilmesi, hem iletişimin nezaket seviyesini hem de anlatımının doğruluğunu güçlendirir. Bu küçük farklar, İngilizcede kendine güvenerek konuşmanın temelidir.”
İngilizcede zorunluluk belirtmek, izin almak veya ihtimal belirtmek gibi durumlarda “can,” “could,” “must,” “may,” “might” gibi yardımcı fiilleri kullanırız.
Can
- Yetenek
Örnek: Ayşe can swim very fast. (Ayşe çok hızlı yüzebiliyor.)
Örnek: Emir can’t finish this book in a week. (Emir bu kitabı bir haftada bitiremez.)
- İzin
Örnek
A: Can I go to the bathroom? (Tuvalete gidebilir miyim?)
B: Of course you can! (Tabii ki gidebilirsin!)
- Olasılık
Örnek: It can be a tough match for us. (Bizim için zor bir maç olabilir.)
Could
“Could”, “can” modal fiilinin ikinci hâlidir, yani geçmiş zaman için kullanılır.
Örnek: When I was 5, I could read. (5 yaşındayken okuyabiliyordum.)
Örnek: I couldn’t help him because I was busy. (Ona yardım edemedim çünkü meşguldüm.)
- Nazik istek
Örnek: Could you help me, please? (Bana yardım edebilir misiniz lütfen?)
- Düşük olasılık
Bir olasılık “can” yerine “could” ile belirtildiğinde bu ihtimalin daha düşük olduğunu anlarız.
Örnek: It could rain tomorrow. (Yarın yağmur yağabilir.)
“Can” ve “could” farkını daha detaylı anlamak için ilgili yazımızı okuyabilirsiniz.
May
Örnek: She may come to the party. (Partiye gelebilir.)
- Resmi izin
Örnek: May I come in? (İçeri girebilir miyim?)
Might
“May” modal fiilinin ikinci hâli olan “might,” tıpkı “can” ve “could”da olduğu gibi daha düşük bir olasılık belirtmek için kullanılır.
- Düşük olasılık
Örnek: He might be at home. (Belki evdedir.)
Örnek: They might not want to help us. (Bize yardım etmek istemeyebilirler.)
Shall
Örnek: Shall we go? (Gidelim mi?)
Must
Örnek: You must wear a seatbelt. (Emniyet kemeri takmalısın.)

- Güçlü çıkarım
Örnek: Mert has just finished her training, so he must be tired. (Mert antrenmanını yeni bitirdi, yani yorgun olmalı.)
“Must” ve “have to” konu anlatımımıza göz atmayı unutmayın!
Should
“Should”, birine tavsiyede bulunurken, olması gereken şeyden bahsederken veya bir şeyin olması beklendiğinde kullanılır. “Should”un kullanımını “must”ın daha zayıf bir versiyonu olarak düşünebilirsiniz.
- Tavsiye / gereklilik
Örnek: You should eat more vegetables. (Daha fazla sebze yemelisin.)
Örnek: I should finish my homework on time. (Ödevimi zamanında bitirmeliyim.)
Örnek: You shouldn’t drink too much coffee. (Çok fazla kahve içmemelisin.)
- Beklenti / tahmin
Örnek: The train should arrive soon. (Trenin yakında gelmesi gerekiyor.)
Örnek: The meeting shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.

“Would” modal fiili, gerçek olmayan şartlı bir durumdan bahsederken (if clause type 2) kullanılabilir.

- Nazik teklif
Örnek: Would you like some tea? (Biraz çay ister misiniz?)
- Geçmiş alışkanlık (“would” & “used to”)
